I'm very excited about it, even though I don't really feel like a designer (I don't own a singlething made by Apple). We're up against some pretty intense competition, such as the Angry Birds phone game, Rock band 3 and quite a few phone apps. Still, it's pretty awesome to be nominated, and I'm looking forward to seeing all the rest of the project displays.
Our two wonderful designer-friends James King and Daisy Ginsberg have put together a great video explaining the project. It's got some great animation, and clips from a radio interview with one of my fellow lab rats, and even some pictures of the infamous Orange Liberation Front...

Considering how many hours of my life have been wasted playing Angry Birds (I have 3 stars on every level), I hope you kick its ass!
ReplyDeleteAlso, this project looks awesome.
@Kevin: thanks! I must admit my loyalties are somewhat divided as I'm pretty sure that most of the summer of '09 consisted of making coloured bacteria and being the bass guitarist in rock-band...
ReplyDeleteWow very exciting news! Good luck ;)
ReplyDelete¡ El proyecto tiene un aspecto fantástico !
ReplyDeleteBuena suerte en la competición :D
Very cool! I have had several discussion with fellow lab rats in my cage about bacterial approaches to environmental sensing. I explored some ideas with rearranging operons to give a readout based on an environmental signal but only made it as far as ideas and scribbles. You guys developed such an elegant solution, well done :)
ReplyDeleteThanks @Khalil and @Raven!
ReplyDelete@James: I must admit, the idea of making a bacteria sensor only came to us about half way through the project. Before then we were just playing around with colours, until our supervisor quietly explained that for iGEM we needed an actual intracellular *machine* not just pretty bacteria :p
Good luck!! That's really exciting
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on the nomination, that's great news! Good luck in the contest, hope you and the bacteria kick some bird ass :)
ReplyDeleteI had a great time at the nominees party, there were loads of great projects there and I'm looking forward too seeing which ones won!
